Design Advice - Learn how to type
Learning how to type is very important. I know this seems obvious, but
it is simply amazing that many designers type like a Bonobo
playing the keys. I don't mean to insult the noble Bonobo.
He hasn't been playing the keys for that long. In a year I'm expecting him
to tackle Oscar
Peterson's Summer Me, Winter Me.
You need to learn how to touch-type
Touch-typing is typing without looking to find the keys. You need to learn
how to touch-type. This is not an option. This is a necessity for anyone
who works on a computer all day. If you actually have to think about typing
while typing, then your work is suffering. When I type, I get to
concentrate on what I'm doing instead of cursing Christopher
Sholes. If you have to look for the shift key every time you capitalize
a word, you are wasting your time. If you have to look at your keyboard
to use shortcuts, you might as well just use your mouse.
You use your computer every day. Typing properly will help your posture
and lessen the likelihood of repetitive stress injuries. You need to learn
how to type. Trust me. It will only take 10 - 15 minutes a day. There are
a whole bunch of free programs that will teach you type or you can buy The
Typing of the Dead. In this arcade game you kill zombies by typing words
correctly. Who would have thought you could kill a zombie by typing daffodil?
If you don't learn how to type you are lazy.
There is simply no other reason not to learn how to type properly.
